In Game 1 of the Italian Lega Basket Serie A league playoffs series, AX Armani Exchange Milan celebrated a hard-fought victory against the visiting Grissin Bon Reggio Emilia 91-82 (24-18, 27-22, 29-22, 11-20), and took a 1-0 series lead.

Benjamin Bentil was the most efficient player for the winners, accumulating 18 points points (4/4 2PT, 3/4 3PT, 1/2 FT), 7 rebounds, and 24 PIR.

On the opposing side, Andrea Cinciarini was the top performer for Reggio Emilia, notched double-double ending with 17 points, 10 assists, and 27 PIR.

Reggio Emilia did not raise the white flag and organized their own huge 18-0 scoring run to cut the deficit to 6 points (74-80) with 7:20 left.

It was not the end, when Rossi Baldi converted two shots from the line (82-86) with 2 minutes to go. But then Shavon Shields made a jumper, Luigi Datome nailed a triple (91-82) and that was enough to finish the game comfortably, grabbing a victory.

The hosts slowly increased their lead and went into a half time with a double-digit advantage (51-40).

The Italian Lega Basket playoffs start today, but the AX Armani Exchange Milan's players have much more on their minds than their first-round opponent.

Although Milan will meet UnaHotels Reggio Emilia in the quarterfinals, the players are already looking forward to their possibly-upcoming matchup against Virtus Segafredo Bologna.

 "I expect tough playoffs but I am optimistic and confident about our performance. Virtus is naturally the favorite for the numbers it has expressed in the league but the most popular team does not always win," Giampaolo Ricci told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"The final? I hope we'll be there," Gigi Datome told before the playoffs. "On the other hand, the Virtus seems to be the strongest on its side of the board. It would be a nice final, from the media and to play."

Virtus won the EuroCup this Wednesday beating Frutti Extra Bursaspor in a decisive fashion. "It certainly gives prestige to Serie A," Datome said about the opponents' achievement.

"We often talk about movement, but it's too broad a word. However, Serie A receives some prestige, Virtus will make the EuroLeague with an important ambition and budget, they already have important players with a titled coach who is respected all over the world," he continued. "It will be nice to have two teams in Serie A capable of competing in the EuroLeague."

Virtus Bologna won the Italian championship last year, beating Milan in the final. They also finished the regular season ahead of Milan with 26 wins compared to 24 wins.

Talking about the chance to capture the title against the team that defeated them last year, Datome was certain: "It would be a nice revenge."

Following the EuroLeague playoff elimination at the hands of reigning champs Anadolu Efes, AX Armani Exchange Milan announced they will not be counting on Malcolm Delaney 's services for the rest of the season. 

The 33-year-old American guard suffered an abdominal muscle injury during Game 2 and his re-evaluation after two weeks wasn't encouraging whatsoever.

Following the abdominal wall injury that Delaney reported, he will be required to go under another period of treatments, the Italian club announced today.

Therefore, he is to be considered not available for the duration of the playoffs. This development draws the curtain on Delaney's two-year stint with Milan. In an interview he conceded to BasketNews two months ago, the former member of the All-EuroLeague First Team said:  

"It's not 100% guaranteed, but Milan will probably be my final stop in Europe. A lot of people are asking me, "Are you retiring?". My plan is not to retire completely."

"I just want to thank all the staff and teammates for doing everything possible to help me through two difficult years, mentally and physically because of the injuries," Malcolm Delaney said in a statement, according to Armani Exchange. 

"Unfortunately, the timing and situation this season took things out of our hands. These were a special two years with two of the best teams I’ve played on, with some of the worst luck, but I loved and appreciated my time here in Milan on and off the court.

Thanks to the fans who supported us, even though I’m upset I can’t fight anymore with my brothers, when we still have a job to finish."
