Italy

The two top seeds of the table, Virtus Bologna and Armani Exchange Milan went through the first round without too many issues, sweeping Pesaro and Reggio Emilia, respectively.

Virtus Bologna will now face the sensation of the season, Bertram Derthona. The team based in Tortona was promoted to the top division only last summer. In their first season ever in Serie A, they reached the final of the Italian Cup and are now in the league's semifinal.

Derthona already defeated Virtus two times during the season, the first one in a regular-season game and the other one in the semifinal of the Italian Cup. Coach Ramondino and his players will be a tough challenge for Virtus, although the side coached by Sergio Scariolo remains the favorite to advance to the final.

On the other hand, Armani Exchange Milan will face Dinamo Sassari in the other semifinal. Sassari probably pulled the biggest upset of the first round of the playoffs, getting rid of Germani Brescia.

However, the good news for Milan is that Nicolo Melli will most likely be available for the series, marking an important return for coach Messina's side. Melli, the team's co-captain, has been out since Game 1 of the EuroLeague playoff series against Anadolu Efes, and his return on the court will provide much-needed help for Milan.

The semifinals will be played in a best-of-five format, while only the finals will be played in a best-of-seven format. The first two games, as well as Games 5 and 7 (if necessary), will be held in the court of the team who has the home-court advantage.
