NBA insider Marc Stein reports that Steve Kerr is expected to step down as Team USA head coach, with Tyronn Lue and Erik Spoelstra emerging as the top candidates to succeed him.
Team USA might soon have a new head coach, according to NBA insider Marc Stein. On Sunday, Stein reported that Steve Kerr "is not expected to continue" in the role.
Early front-runners to succeed him include Miami Heat's Erik Spoelstra and Los Angeles Clippers' Tyronn Lue, both of whom are currently assistants on the team.
The United States recently secured its fifth consecutive Olympic gold medal, with the next major international competitions being the FIBA World Cup in 2027 and the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028.
Kerr, a four-time NBA champion as the head coach of the Golden State Warriors, was an assistant coach for the gold medal-winning 2020 U.S. men's Olympic basketball team. He was named head coach of Team USA in December 2021.
However, in 2023, Kerr led Team USA to a disappointing fourth-place finish at the FIBA World Cup, marking the second consecutive tournament where the U.S. failed to win a medal. The team's overtime loss to Canada in the bronze medal game (127-118) resulted in the first U.S. men's basketball team to lose three games in a World Cup or Olympics since 2004.
