Carmelo Anthony, recently named a 2024 Hall of Fame inductee, believes his No. 7 jersey should be retired by the New York Knicks. Speaking at the Final Four, Anthony said, "Why wait?"
Carmelo Anthony is officially headed to the Hall of Fame, and now, he’s looking toward the rafters at Madison Square Garden.
While speaking at the Final Four in San Antonio after being announced as part of the 2025 Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame class, Anthony was asked if he believes his No. 7 jersey should be retired by the New York Knicks.
"Why not?" Anthony responded, per the New York Post. "I would love to see that. For me, it’s like, 'Why wait?' If you got to think about it then cool, just let it be."
"A lot of surprises are happening right now around me, so I’m trying to stay in the moment," Anthony said. "And if that’s one of the surprises, then I would be ecstatic about that. I would love to see that jersey hung up."
Now 40, Anthony remains a visible supporter of the team, regularly attending games at the Garden. As the New York Knicks prepare for another playoff run, Melo believes in their chances.
"We’re going to get healthy, we’re getting healthy now. We have a couple games left before the playoffs," he said. "I’m rolling with us. I think we have a really, really good team."
"I think we have the pieces everybody said that we needed. It’s just a matter of them putting it all together. It’s on the players at this point."
Anthony played seven seasons with the Knicks and remains one of the most beloved players in recent franchise history.
In those seven seasons, Anthony earned six All-Star selections, led the NBA in scoring with 28.7 points per game in 2012-13, and carried the Knicks to three straight playoff appearances from 2010 to 2013.
He’s also one of just seven players in franchise history to score over 10,000 points in a Knicks jersey.
