The Celtics legend spoke in an interview with NBC Sports Boston, per MassLive, about Tatum’s incredible season and the lack of respect he feels the young star still gets around the league.
"He’s probably the most disrespected superstar in our league," Pierce said. "When I watch Tatum on and off the court, he’s humble, he works hard."
Pierce, who has witnessed Tatum's commitment to the game firsthand while watching him train in Los Angeles each year, knows just how much Tatum loves basketball.
"I have a chance to watch him workout in LA every year, he loves the game," Pierce shared. "He has something to play for."
Despite Tatum’s consistent excellence, Pierce pointed to the outside criticism that has followed him, especially when it came to his role on Team USA during the Paris Olympics.
"Look what they did to him at the Olympics," Pierce said, referring to the lack of recognition Tatum received compared to other stars.
Tatum, 27, is having an outstanding season, averaging 26.9 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 6.0 assists per game.
The Celtics, with a 57-20 record, are the second seed in the Eastern Conference.
