NBA insider Marc J. Spears suggests the Mavericks traded Luka Doncic to the Lakers partly due to Jaylen Brown's dominant defense in the 2024 NBA Finals, which raised doubts about Doncic's leadership and conditioning.

NBA insider Marc J. Spears recently suggested that Boston Celtics star forward Jaylen Brown was the reason why the Mavs decided to move on from Luka, the face of the franchise.
"What he did to Luka in the Finals, shutting him down, guarding him full court, making it unbearable offensively, led Dallas questioning Luka as the leader of the team, and questioning whether he was in shape or not," Spears said on the Cedric Maxwell Podcast.
Brown led the Celtics to a five-game series victory over the Mavericks, earning Finals MVP honors in the process.
While Spears offered this perspective, Dallas GM Nico Harrison previously stated that he believed AD was a better cultural fit for the team than the 25-year-old Slovenian.
Additionally, concerns over Doncic's conditioning reportedly played a big role in the Mavericks' decision to trade him rather than commit to a supermax extension in the summer.
