Utah Jazz traded its 3 future first-round picks to Phoenix Suns for one first-round pick in return.
With the trade deadline getting closer each day, teams are starting to make more deals. While some teams are willing to make a deal, that would allow them to get a superstar and contend for a title right now, some teams might be making sneaky deals that could help them long-term.
The Utah Jazz traded away their three first-round picks, which wouldn’t necessarily have as much value for them as it might have for other teams, for a single Phoenix Suns first-round pick in 2031.
After making blockbuster trades with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Minnesota Timberwolves in the summer of 2022, the Jazz own those teams’ first-round picks in 2025, 2027, and 2029.
They still have their own picks, which means they still have at least one first-round pick each of those years.
Jazz traded their less valuable picks, from the teams that are doing well at this moment and potentially going forward. The Cavs currently have the best record in the East, while the Timberwolves are looking good in the long term as well, building their team around superstar Anthony Edwards.
This means that the picks Jazz traded away will be low first-round picks, and won’t have much value for them. In return, they’re getting the Suns’ unprotected first-round pick in 2031, which has the potential to be good. Knowing the age of their current roster, the Suns might be in a rebuilding process by 2031, and that pick could end up being very high.

For the Suns, this trade might help them to assemble a multi-team trade to acquire Jimmy Butler.
Having more picks should make a trade offer more appealing, now having multiple first-round picks to trade.
