The Latvian point guard suffered a medial collateral ligament in his left knee in October 2023, following a breakout performance with Latvia in the 2023 FIBA World Cup. He underwent surgery and was expected to be sidelined for the rest of the season.

After an injury and treatment process that lasted about six months, the young playmaker regained his form. Zagars officially returned in BC Wolves's 111-79 win over Pieno Zvaigzdes in the Lithuanian League.

Zagars, 23, who stayed on the court for 11 minutes in his comeback game, finished the match with 5 points on 1/6 from distance, 1 assist and 1 steal.

In the 2023 FIBA World Cup, Zagars set a new record for the most assists in a single game with 17 in the fifth-place game against Lithuania. He was named to the All-Second Team of the tournament.
