Dario Brizuela has officially become a member of Barcelona's backcourt after opting out of his contract with Malaga.
Just a few hours after Dario Brizuela exercised his unilateral right to early termination of the contract that bound him to Unicaja Malaga until June 30, 2026, his new team, FC Barcelona, announced the Spanish shooting guard on a three-year deal.
Brizuela joins former Joventut Badalona forward Joel Parra and former NBA big man Willy Hernangomez as the latest additions to the squad coached by Roger Grimau. As Juan Calderon from SUR reported, it is thought that the buy-out Barca paid to Unicaja would be around €1.15 million.
Until now, the former Unicaja guard has played a total of 256 games in the ACB , with an average of 19 minutes, 9.8 points and 1.9 assists. Its versatility is one of its strengths.
Brizuela, 28, was formed in the lower categories of CB Easo de Donosti, despite the fact that in 2011 he already signed for the lower categories of Estudiantes. He stayed there for eight and a half seasons. Despite having played two games with the first team in 2012, Brizuela consolidated in the first team of the collegiate team from the 2015-16 season, after a season on loan at Huesca.
His growth as a player aroused the interest of teams with a bigger budget than the student ones and it was Unicaja Malaga who finally took him away.
During his time at Unicaja he has established himself as one of the great stars of Spanish basketball. Shortly after landing in Malaga, he managed to reach the final of the Copa del Rey, held at the Martín Carpena in 2020. During these seasons in our team he has confirmed himself as a regular in the Spanish National Team, last summer managing to win gold at the EuroBasket with Spain.
The 2022-23 season was very special for Unicaja and for Dario Brizuela, since he was selected as a member of the best team of the Basketball Champions League, in addition to winning the Copa del Rey with his team.
Last season, Brizuela averaged 12.4 points, 1.4 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 9.3 EFF per game over 15 appearances in the Basketball Champions League.
In the Spanish ACB League, the 28-year-old averaged 9.1 points, 1.4 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 7.2 EFF per game over 34 appearances.
