Darío Brizuela has chosen to become a free agent. In order for the Spanish shooting guard to be able to sign with FC Barcelona, he had to opt out of his contract with Unicaja Malaga first.
Dario Brizuela has exercised his unilateral right to early termination of the contract that bound him to Unicaja Malaga until June 30, 2026, the Spanish club announced.
The Spanish international guard, who had recently renewed his contract, thus ends his time in Malaga. Since his arrival at Unicaja in December 2019, the player from San Sebastian has played a total of 173 games with the green shirt, with averages of 12.3 points, 2.1 assists and a PIR of 10.1.
Last season, Brizuela averaged 12.4 points, 1.4 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 9.3 EFF per game over 15 appearances in the Basketball Champions League.
In the Spanish ACB League, the 28-year-old averaged 9.1 points, 1.4 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 7.2 EFF per game over 34 appearances.
During his time at Unicaja he has established himself as one of the great stars of Spanish basketball. Shortly after landing in Malaga, he managed to reach the final of the Copa del Rey, held at the Martín Carpena in 2020. During these seasons in our team he has confirmed himself as a regular in the Spanish National Team, last summer managing to win gold at the EuroBasket with Spain.
The 2022-23 season was very special for Unicaja and for Dario Brizuela, since he was selected as a member of the best team of the Basketball Champions League, in addition to winning the Copa del Rey with his team.
Brizuela's next stop will be FC Barcelona, as Juan Calderon from SUR reported. It is thought that the buy-out would be around €1.1 million.
