Printezis' Last Dance: Final Four players share stories of the legendary forward

2022-05-23

If the game against FC Barcelona in the Final Four held in Belgrade had any meaning for Olympiacos Piraeus, that was inextricably associated with two important reasons. Firstly, it was a chance for the team to offer their almost 12.000 colorful fans something to remember after losing the semifinal to Anadolu Efes Istanbul in a dramatic fashion.
'Always there for us': Olympiacos players on Giorgos Bartzokas winning Coach of the Year Award

2022-05-19

Giorgos Bartzokas became the latest recipient of the EuroLeague Coach of the Year award, as the Greek tactician won the accolade for the second time in his career after 2013.

Olympiacos Piraeus' mastermind received the award named after the legendary coach Alexander Gomelski from Nena Ivkovic, the wife of the late coaching legend Dusan Ivkovic who had won the EuroLeague with the Greek side in 2012.

The Reds are preparing for their Final Four semi-final game against Anadolu Efes Istanbul, having three award-winning members in their ranks.

Forward Sasha Vezenkov and guard Kostas Sloukas were chosen to the All-EuroLeague First and Second Team, respectively, in addition to Sloukas racking up another accolade, the 'Magic Moment of the Year' award, thanks to his buzzer-beating 3-point shot against no other than Anadolu Efes in Piraeus.

While paying a visit to the Stark Arena mixed zone, Olympiacos' players answered BasketNews' questions regarding their award-winning coach.

"He deserves the award 100%," Sloukas said.

"He is the man who put this team together and dreamed of it, putting his touch, and now we all celebrate together that we are in the four best teams in Europe. But we don't stop here."

In a similar vein, Sasha Vezenkov pointed out that everyone on the team is happy because we are a family, a team with excellent chemistry.

"As I made the All-Euroleague First team, Kostas Sloukas made the second, so we're all happy about our coach being voted as the best because it's a team sport. One's success is another person's happiness.

He's teaching us, and he's giving us advice. He's always there for us. Like a family, we have some ups and downs," the Bulgarian forward continued.

Thomas Walkup can't wait for the Final Four: 'It will be very special'

2022-05-15

Thomas Walkup was one of the main warriors that earned Olympiacos Piraeus a win in front of thousands of crazy fans in Game 5 of the EuroLeague playoffs series against AS Monaco.

It will be the first time for Walkup in the EuroLeague Final Four. The American guard came to Zalgiris Kaunas the next season after the team made it to the final four, beating Olympiacos, so he never got to experience the thrill of making it to the grand stage of European basketball.

"Before I came to Europe, I could not imagine how huge this achievement is, but this year, now five years into European basketball, I have realized that few basketball players manage to experience the atmosphere of a Final 4 at least once," Walkup told Gazzetta dello Sport. "We are not going to take this opportunity for granted."

Walkup is beloved by the Greek fans. "This year, as a team, I can say that we played a game that had no selfishness, both on defense and offense. The people recognized it and that is why they express their support so strongly," the guard explained.

"Even when we were down, I received messages like 'we believe in you, keep going!' and I know very well that these do not happen all the time and everywhere," he continued. "Coming to Olympiacos, I have appreciated many things and I really have fun."

Thomas Walkup is 'almost happy' Olympiacos lost Game 4, shares unknown Quincy Acy story

2022-05-06

For die-hard Olympiacos Piraeus fans, Thomas Walkup is their version of the Terminator. The man who takes on a mission, especially on the defensive end, and pulls it off. For some journalists, the blond guard is the rightful successor of Acie Law and Daniel Hackett, arguably the two best defensive backcourt players that Olympiacos had in the last decade. For the mainstream audience and those who ...
Bartzokas' respect for Monaco and the fact Olympiacos' players won't forget

2022-04-28

Olympiacos Piraeus came to Monaco with one thing in mind - how to get at least one win. Well, after beating the hosts 87-84 in Game 3, their mission in the Principality seems to be over. Not for Giorgos Bartzokas and his players, though. The prevailing sentiment in the Reds' camp right after Game 3 was one of relief, not of excitement. Celebrations stayed mainly on the court when players, ...
Bartzokas: 'Our greatest achievement has been to make Olympiacos' fans believe in us'

2022-04-20

Olympiacos Piraeus delivered a defensive clinic against EuroLeague's most effective offense, holding AS Monaco down to only 54 points in Game 1 of the EuroLeague playoff series. That's exactly 30 points less than Monaco's scoring average in the current campaign (84) and, by extension, a new season-low for the EuroLeague newcomers. The game was held in front of a sellout crowd of 11.580 that pushed ...
Thomas Walkup: 'We might have exceeded other people's expectations, but not our own'

2022-04-07

Despite the absences of guard Kostas Sloukas and center Moustapha Fall, Olympiacos Piraeus allowed only 26 points in the second half to down FC Barcelona at home and secure one of the three top spots in the EuroLeague regular-season standings. The Reds concluded their obligations in the first part of the current campaign at 19-9 and are now waiting for the Real Madrid-FC Bayern Munich clash on ...

2022-01-27

Crvena Zvezda Belgrade forced Olympiacos Piraeus to their first home defeat in the EuroLeague season while racking up their first-ever win at the Peace and Friendship Stadium. Trinchieri on Bayern getting plastered in Piraeus: 'It was embarrassing, but shit happens' (1)

2021-12-16

FC Bayern Munich could not keep up with hosts Olympiacos for the entire game in Piraeus, which resulted in a heavy defeat for the German side. Despite picking up four wins in the last five contests, the team coached by Andrea Trinchieri was held down to just 60 points by the Reds' sweeping defense. Since the Greeks managed to establish a double-digit margin, it was all over even before Bayern ...

However, after a strong start, Olympiacos won the game 75-50. “I think our attention to details on the defensive end was really what did the job,” ...
A steal or a foul? Now teammates, Walkup and Sloukas can laugh off last season's moment

2021-09-19

Last year Thomas Walkup famously stole the ball from Kostas Sloukas and made a game-winning basket against Olympiacos. This year he is a teammate of Sloukas, after moving from Zalgiris Kaunas to Pireaus. So you can only imagine how the first day of Walkup's visit to Olympiacos locker room looked like. "Before I signed here, everybody was saying 'This is a foul,' and then I signed, and everybody ...
