The Lakers superstar was emotional before the game, tearing up during the Mavericks' tribute video. But he didn’t let the emotions get the best of him—instead, he delivered one of his best performances of the season. Luka scored 45 points, grabbed 8 rebounds, and dished out 6 assists, leading the Lakers to a 112-97 win.
After the game, Lakers head coach JJ Redick reflected on Doncic’s return to play against his former team, calling the performance something few are capable of.
"To have the emotional resolve to go out and deliver that kind of performance—it’s superhuman," Redick said. "And I think his teammates know that too. They can empathize with what he’s been through these last few months. There was anticipation, maybe some dread, certainly a ton of emotion—and then he went and did that. It’s big-time."
Redick was also asked about Doncic’s ability to shine in high-emotion environments. He responded with a smile and a joke.
"Honestly, I thought he was gonna get 50. I was disappointed," Redick joked.
With this win, the Lakers continue to solidify their hold on the third seed in the Western Conference, improving to a 49-31 record.
They’ll next face the Houston Rockets before wrapping up the regular season at home, then hitting the road for their final game against the Portland Trail Blazers. Wins in both remaining matchups are crucial for the Lakers to lock in the No. 3 seed in the West.
