Although Smart didn’t play on the court, Boston fans showed plenty of love for the former Celtic, chanting, "We want Marcus."
After the game, Smart revealed that it was emotional to finally return to Boston, saying the love from the fans is always there.
"The fans are always showing love — and it definitely brings back memories. I know my wife was over there trying not to cry," Smart commented on the chants, via Noa Dalzell.
"The love is always there from both sides, myself and the fans. It’s definitely emotional coming back, but I love it. I’m a part of this city; nine years here, it’s all love," Smart said.
However, there may have been too much love for Smart, as one fan was ejected from the game after a verbal altercation with him.
"He just crossed a line," Smart explained via Celtics on CLNS. "And we all know I don’t do line-crossing. And that was it. We move on. Unfortunate. You never want to see that, especially for a guy who’s coming back and who’s given this city everything he has."
Smart spent nine seasons with the Boston Celtics before being traded. During his time in Boston, he made a huge impact, becoming a fan favorite, making the NBA Finals in 2022, and winning the Defensive Player of the Year award during the 2021-22 season.
