After the Brooklyn Nets' hard-fought 111-108 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers, D’Angelo Russell spoke with HoopsHype about his role with the team, his relationship with head coach Jordi Fernandez, his time with the Lakers, and the growing star of Austin Reaves.

Russell expressed deep appreciation for the trust and connection he has built with head coach Jordi Fernandez.

"I just appreciate it more than anything," said Russell. "I’ve come from places where I don’t have that relationship. I’ve kind of just had success off of just showing up and no relationship."

When asked how Fernandez compares to former Nets head coach Kenny Atkinson, Russell noted that both are "workers" who lead by example.

"They’re both workers. I think that’s where their success comes from," said Russell.

With a younger roster around him, Russell has taken it upon himself to lead by example and help communicate the messages from Fernandez.

"I try to reiterate Jordi’s messages as much as I can," Russell explained. "He speaks what he means. As a young group, it can go through one ear and out the other, so I try to be another voice on the team that can relay his message and lead by example."

Russell highlighted that being on a team that prioritizes unity has made a significant difference for him.

"To be here, the team is everything from every aspect you can think of," Russell shared. "As a team, we win. As a team, we lose. To be engraved into that and just fit in is a good feeling."

Returning to Brooklyn has been a rewarding experience for Russell. After leaving the team in the past, his return represents a fresh opportunity to contribute in a way that fits his current role in his career.

"I’m at the point in my career where I’m not going out and scoring 25 points every night and wowing with numbers," said Russell. "It’s a point where I’m trying to gravitate towards doing it the right way, and how I can contribute to winning is my priority."

Russell made it clear that he would love to return to Brooklyn next season.

"Yeah. Why wouldn’t I?" he said when asked about his interest in staying with the Nets. "I love these guys. I appreciate this, and I would love to be back."

Russell also touched on the impressive development of Austin Reaves, his former Lakers teammate, who has become an integral part of the team’s success.

"He’s such a killer, and he’s so underrated," Russell said. "I don’t think that LeBron or Luka can hinder his success or knock him off of how good he is. Kudos to him. I’m cheering for him."

This season the 29-year-old guard averages 13 points, 2.8 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game. He is shooting 40.4% from the field, and 32.7% from three.
