Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv / Schedule
EuroLeague Head of Competitions, Diego Guillen, recently visited Tel Aviv to evaluate the return to normalcy amid the prolonged ceasefires. While most teams supported the idea of bringing games back to Israel, not all were in agreement.
Representatives from ASVEL Villeurbanne voiced concerns that players would be reluctant to travel, Bayern Munich expressed skepticism, and leading the opposition was Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens.
According to Walla Sports, Panathinaikos, has made it clear that even if a decision is made to resume games in Israel, they will not participate.
The club argues that playing in Israel would be unfair from a competitive standpoint, as its rivals for a top seed faced Maccabi in an empty arena in Belgrade, while Panathinaikos would be forced to compete in front of 11,000 fans at Menora Mivtachim Arena.
Ultimately, the issue was not put to a vote, and the EuroLeague management will have the final say.
Israeli teams began playing their home games abroad last season to ensure the safety of visiting teams due to the ongoing situation in the country.
