Golden State Warriors star Jimmy Butler is being sued for failing to pay rent, leaving the property damaged, and allegedly changing the locks while denying the property owner access for inspections
Golden State Warriors newest addition Jimmy Butler has gotten into some legal troubles, and apparently is being sued for causing damage to a property he used to stay at in Miami, not paying rent and changing the locks, according to WPLG Local 10 News.
In the suit, South Florida company Five Star, alleges Butler stayed in the Miami Beach home two months past when his lease expired in August of 2024. He initially signed the lease in August of 2022, per the lawsuit.
Five Star said that the lease agreement stated Butler would owe double the rent, which would be $130,000 per month, if he stayed past the agreed to term without written permission from the landlord.
Additionally, the lawsuit alleges Butler left the property in disrepair. Court documents also allege Butler caused $125,000 in damages, including mold issues, damaged drywall and flooring, an unmaintained pool, and a malfunctioning HVAC system. The lawsuit further claims Butler changed the locks and denied the property owner access for inspections.
In total Butler is being sued for $257,282. That number represents two months’ rent and the damage to the property, minus Butler’s $130,000 security deposit, which Five Star said they were legally entitled to apply to his outstanding balance.
Jimmy Butler spent six seasons with the Miami Heat before publicly requesting a trade following multiple suspensions by the team.
Despite the rocky ending, his tenure in Miami was largely successful, as he led the Heat to two NBA Finals appearances in 2020 and 2023.
