The delay occurred after the team's loss to the British squad on the third matchday of the EuroBasket 2025 qualifiers (21/11). The players, led by coach Vassilis Spanoulis, were instructed by airport authorities to wait in the surrounding area, the SDNA reports
The Hellenic Basketball Federation (HBF) issued a statement on the matter.
"As the baggage was being delivered, the security officers ordered the evacuation of the airport, which was carried out in an organized and calm manner. At this time (13:00 Greece time), the team's delegation is outside the airport and awaiting further instructions."
In the meantime, Gatwick Airport management reassured the public through their official X account.
"The safety of our passengers and staff remains our first priority. We are working hard to resolve the issue as soon as possible."
The team is currently waiting for further instructions before they can continue their journey back to Greece.
