The two narrowly missed working together at Anadolu Efes when Ataman took over in the summer of 2017 -- just as Osman left for the NBA to join the Cleveland Cavaliers and play alongside LeBron James.
However, they have a history with Turkey's national team, where Ataman coached Osman in three major international tournaments: the 2014 FIBA World Cup, EuroBasket 2015, and EuroBasket 2022.
"He's a great player in his prime and also a great character, which definitely matters," Ataman praised Osman, speaking to Vassilis Skoundis of Sport24. "The elements that basically characterize his competitive character and game are his physical strength, his aggression on both ends of the court, and his ability to push the tempo when you least expect it."
Ataman also highlighted Osman's versatility, noting his ability to play multiple positions.
"He can play in both forward positions, reads situations very well, and puts the team before himself," Ataman continued. "In addition to talent and great quality, he also possesses maturity and experience at the highest level. He is a true NBA player who comes to Panathinaikos to give us many important things."
Osman is returning to Europe after seven years in the NBA, playing for the Cavaliers and San Antonio Spurs.
Last season, the 29-year-old appeared in 72 NBA games, averaging 6.8 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per contest.
