Jayson Kidd said he honestly believed Jaylen Brown played his best basketball and claimed he didn't want to start a beef or anything similar.
After playing in the NBA Finals last season, the Dallas Mavericks recruited Klay Thompson to join the squad. Mavs head coach Jason Kidd explained the lessons he learned and explained his comment about Jaylen Brown.
The Mavericks lost the Finals 1-4 to the Boston Celtics. Nonetheless, the series featured some interesting moments between the two teams, even though a lot of games ended in double-digit wins.
"In the Finals, I'm trying to figure out in Boston who's going to miss a shot. Unfortunately, there was no one. KP (Kristaps Porzingis) played well, the MVP in Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum. The list goes on and on. We had our hands full. I think the experience of going there, understanding if we have the opportunity to get there, we know what we have to do," Jason Kidd said during the inaugural episode of the Dubs Talk podcast.
During the series, Kidd said that Jaylen Brown was the best player on the Celtics roster, sparking a myriad of reactions online.
As Jayson Tatum was seen as the team's leader and a more accomplished member of the duo, many believed Kidd was just playing mind games. The Mavericks coach clarified his position.
"He was playing the best, I think, at the time. Some took it as I was trying to start something, but he had just won the Eastern Conference MVP, and he actually ended up winning the MVP in the Finals, so I don't know if I was wrong," Kidd said.
"As we know, the media can sometimes take it as though I was trying to start something between Jayson and Jaylen. But it wasn't that. I was just making a comment that Jaylen was playing at a high level. [Jrue] Holiday agreed. It wasn't that I was starting anything," Kidd explained. "Jaylen was playing his best basketball at the right time. I made that comment, and some took it as I was trying to start something, but I wasn't."
