Brian Goorjian explained the inclusion of Joe Ingles in the Boomers roster, highlighting his unique skills and veteran leadership. Goorjian believes Ingles is crucial for team cohesion and performance in high-pressure situations.
Brian Goorjian, the head coach of the Australian Boomers, recently discussed the reasons behind Joe Ingles' inclusion in the national team roster.
Goorjian acknowledged the pressures and challenges faced during the selection process. He highlighted the intense scrutiny and opinions from various quarters but stressed that every decision was made for the betterment of the team and Australian basketball.
"I just feel like every decision that was made was for the betterment as a team and for the best that we could possibly do basketball in Australia in the country," Goorjian stated after the Olympics basketball quarterfinal loss against Serbia.
He expressed pride in the team's accomplishments and the progress made under his tenure, citing the historical achievement of securing a medal.
According to Goorjian, Ingles brings a unique set of irreplaceable skills. However, Ingles made only one appearance during the 2024 Paris Olympics basketball tournament.
He played for 2 minutes against Spain but didn't record anything on the stat sheet.
"We don't have a guy that can create shots and get shots under pressure that can score in the half court, and that's what these things get to," Goorjian explained.

He mentioned other talented young players like Dyson Daniels and Josh Green but pointed out that none could replicate Ingles' shot-making ability in critical moments.
Furthermore, Goorjian praised Ingles' physical condition and dedication, stating that despite being 35 years old, he remains in excellent shape and continues to perform at a high level.
"When I came into camp, he's in incredible shape. You see guys that are 35 years old playing in this that can still go; he can still go," Goorjian said.
He credited Ingles for his leadership both on and off the court, indicating that his presence significantly contributes to the team's cohesion and resilience.
Goorjian's remarks underline the strategic importance of veteran players in balancing the team's youthful energy and ensuring competitive performance on the international stage.
