Four players were cut from the extended 16-man Lithuania national team's roster ahead of the upcoming Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Puerto Rico.
Lithuania national team head coach Kazys Maksvytis announced the final 12-man squad for the Olympic Qualifying tournament.
After a 92-86 friendly win over Slovenia, Maksvytis thanked Motiejus Krivas, Vaidas Kariniauskas, Rokas Giedraitis and Eimantas Bendzius for their work.
"This position is kind of overcrowded, with Edgaras Ulanovas, Arnas Butkevicius, Deividas Sirvydis, and Marius Grigonis basically all being able to play in the third position," Maksvytis explained when asked why Giedraitis was left out.
"You can't take all the small forwards, so we had to choose. We were somewhat concerned about Butkevicius and what shape he would return in. But we chose these players. It wasn't an easy decision, but it had to be made."
In the current 12-man squad, the Sacramento Kings star Domantas Sabonis leads the way. Of those selected, only Azuolas Tubelis hasn't played with the national team in a big tournament. He made his debut for the national team last February, but it was during the EuroBasket Qualifiers.
This summer, the Lithuanian national team will face Mexico and Ivory Coast in the group stage of the Olympic Qualifying tournament in San Juan (Puerto Rico). In case they advance to the knock-out stage, Italy, Puerto Rico, or Bahrain will be waiting.
The Paris Olympics will take place from July 26 to August 11. If Lithuania advances, they will play Team USA, Serbia, and South Sudan in the group.
