Dimitris Itoudis revealed that Hapoel's owner, Ofer Yannay, was the reason he chose to return to coaching this season.
Dimitris Itoudis was initially set to sit out this season without a club, but when the opportunity to lead an exciting project with Hapoel Shlomo Tel Aviv came along, he couldn’t resist.
Speaking on the Greek Basketball Federation’s web radio, Itoudis shared that the team's owner, Ofer Yannay, played a pivotal role in convincing him to return to coaching.
"I had decided not to work this season, but the team owner called me regularly, sharing his vision, his goals for Hapoel Tel Aviv, and his ambitions for the sport," Itoudis explained.
"We all need to listen, understand, and engage with people who are committed to investing," he added.
"If the EuroLeague is considering expansion, the voice and actions of our club’s owner must be heard. That’s what ultimately convinced me to join, and that’s why we’re working together. I’m here now, aiming to build something meaningful," Itoudis stated.

Itoudis further elaborated on Yannay's enthusiasm and his long-term vision for the club.
"He’s new to the basketball and sports world, so his passion is undeniable," Itoudis noted. "There’s a clear distinction between having experience and developing a vision over time versus being new and shaping your own ideas—whether through personal insight or learning from others."
"Ofer is committed to basketball, despite his already demanding schedule. He makes time for the sport, for his coaches, and for his players. While he’s pleased with how the team is performing now, his focus remains on the future," Itoudis concluded.
Hapoel has made a significant splash this season, signing prominent players in the offseason and bringing Itoudis on as head coach midway through.
After reaching the EuroCup finals earlier this week, the club isn’t settling for just that—they’re aiming to make their mark on the highest stage. Talks are already underway with top players like Vasilije Micic for next season.
