The Philadelphia 76ers have announced that star center Joel Embiid will undergo arthroscopic surgery next week on his troublesome left knee.
According to ESPN's Shams Charania, Embiid will be reevaluated in six weeks and is expected to make a full recovery.
The reigning MVP has battled lingering knee issues for over a year, ultimately forcing him to be sidelined for the remainder of the season in late February.
Initially, there was hope that surgery could be avoided, but after more than a month of deliberation, the decision was made to proceed with the procedure.
Embiid’s extended absence has only compounded the struggles of the 76ers, who are enduring a disastrous season. They currently sit 13th in the Eastern Conference with a 23-53 record and are on pace for their worst finish since the 2016-17 season when they won just 28 games.
Limited to just 19 games this season, Embiid has averaged 23.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 4.5 assists—far from the dominant form that earned him MVP honors last year.
