Sports analyst Stephen A. Smith said he doesn't believe that an international player can be the face of the NBA, stating NBA is an American born sport.
Every year, the NBA welcomes more talent from overseas, and international players are making an undeniable impact. In fact, the last six NBA MVPs were born outside the United States, and this season, Serbian Nikola Jokic and Canadian Shai Gilgeous-Alexander are among the frontrunners for the award.

ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith recently reacted to Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards’ comment that Victor Wembanyama is the face of the league. Smith, however, expressed skepticism about an international player ever holding that title.
"I don't believe an international player can be the face of the NBA. I know they're global, iconic figures, and their popularity extends worldwide, but the NBA is an American-born sport… My wish is that Anthony Edwards changes his mind," Smith said on First Take, via ClutchPoints.
Despite Smith’s stance, the rise of international superstars suggests otherwise. Players like Giannis Antetokounmpo, Luka Doncic, Nikola Jokic, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander are dominating the league, while young talents like Victor Wembanyama represent the future of basketball. With the influx of elite international prospects, it seems inevitable that one will soon become the undisputed face of the NBA.
