Vassilis Spanoulis is set to become the new head coach of AS Monaco, taking over the reins from Sasa Obradovic, sources tell BasketNews.
After parting ways with long-time coach Sasa Obradovic, AS Monaco have found his successor.
The Monegasque club officially announced that Vassilis Spanoulis would take over the head coaching reins from Obradovic. Spanoulis signed a two-year deal with an option for the third season.
Spanoulis, who is also in charge of the Greek national team, last coached Peristeri Domino's from 2022 until 2024.
Spanoulis may not have prior EuroLeague coaching experience, but his wealth of knowledge is unquestionable. A three-time EuroLeague champion and three-time Final Four MVP as a player, he brings an impressive pedigree to the table.
At just 42, Spanoulis is emerging as one of the most intriguing new faces in the coaching business. He has already crafted a solid resume during his two seasons with Peristeri and his first stint with the Greek national team.
After retiring from professional basketball in 2021, Spanoulis turned to coaching a year later and took over Peristeri as the head coach. Under Spanoulis' leadership, the Greek club reached the Basketball Champions League's (BCL) Final Four last season for the first time in the club's history.
He led Hellas to a victory in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament and reached the quarterfinals in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, where they were eliminated by World Cup winners Germany.
With 7 wins and 4 losses, Monaco are currently tied-5th in the EuroLeague. After winning the French League (LNB) last season, Monaco are currently just 7th in the standings with 5 wins and 3 losses.
Spanoulis' first game as the head coach of Monaco is set to take place on November 29th against Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens, a club that Spanoulis famously left in 2010 to join their biggest rivals, Olympiacos Piraeus.
After the game against PAO, Monaco will play against Olympiacos in the very next round.
