AS Monaco received a €18,500 fine for not fielding players in friendly matches who technically did not have permission from the French League to play.
AS Monaco have already been sanctioned by the French League (LNB) this season. The league has imposed another sanction to the EuroLeague's squad.
The LNB announced that Monaco has been fined €18,500 for fielding players in friendly matches that technically did not have the approval to play.
Contrary to the new requirement, Monaco did not provide the player list and the box score of five friendly games outside of France before the season in early September (vs. Unicaja, Baskonia, Real Madrid, Rio Breogan, and Valencia).
"The LNB has changed its regulations and has now formally assumed jurisdiction over the qualifications of players for friendly matches and considers that these matches are preparation matches for the Betclic ELITE, even if these are international matches against EuroLeague teams that are sometimes scheduled and played on the same day," Monaco's lawyer Xavier Le Cerf-Galle explained to Alexandre Lacoste from BeBasket.
Theoretically, Monaco could've received a much bigger fine than they did, as the maximum punishment is €5000 per player per match.
Monaco have already received a €20,000 fine and have been deducted a win in the competition due to a failure to disclose full details of Mike James' contract. The club has appealed the decision. The case will be examined on October 11th.
