Last year, the soon-to-be-36-year-old guard averaged 8 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game in 24 contests for the Grizzlies. That proved to be his career-last season, as the veteran player announced his retirement Thursday.

"The next chapter is about chasing my dreams and sharing my growth," Rose told The Athletic's Shams Charania.

Rose's future in the NBA has been the subject of speculation after his latest Instagram post, where he appeared holding a rose. Speculation began that Rose might be hinting at a potential retirement after being waived and not seemingly having a clear path back to the NBA.

Rose made history in the 2010-11 season, when he won the NBA MVP award, becoming the youngest MVP in the history of the league at just 23 years old, after putting up 25.0 points, 7.7 assists, and 4.1 rebounds that season.

However, a tragic injury in 2012 would begin his downfall, as he tore his ACL against the Philadelphia 76ers. Since then, he became injury-prone, and would spend the latter half of the 2010s playing with the Knicks, Timberwolves, Cavaliers, and Pistons. After a refreshing second stint with the Knicks from 2021 to 2023, he signed with the Grizzlies, but due to injuries and suspensions, Rose and Ja Morant didn't get to play together.
