Alex Mumbru is expected to take over as head coach of the German men's national basketball team, according to Nacho Duke of MARCA and Rupert Fabig of Hamburger Abendblatt. The 45-year-old Spaniard will replace Gordon Herbert, who has coached Germany since 2021 and is now set to become the new head coach of FC Bayern Munich.

Mumbru will lead the current world champions and fourth-place finishers at the recent Olympic Games in Paris, a team that includes key players like captain Dennis Schroder, the Wagner brothers, Daniel Theis, and EuroLeague stars.

According to Nacho Duke, the coach is expected to sign a multi-year contract and have his official presentation in the coming days.

Mumbru's official debut as head coach is scheduled for November 22, when Germany faces Sweden in the FIBA EuroBasket 2025 Qualifiers. So far in the competition, Germany has won against Montenegro and lost to Bulgaria.

Mumbru began his coaching career in 2018, immediately after retiring as a player with Bilbao Basket. He quickly transitioned to the sidelines, taking charge of the Bilbao team, where he often exceeded expectations.

He remained with the club until 2022, when he signed with Valencia Basket. However, his tenure at Valencia ended in April of this year, before the end of his second season.

As a player, Mumbru enjoyed a successful career, winning the Spanish League in 2007 with Real Madrid and earning numerous accolades with the Spanish national team, including a silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, gold at the 2006 FIBA World Cup, gold at the 2009 FIBA EuroBasket, silver at the 2007 FIBA EuroBasket, and bronze at the 2013 FIBA EuroBasket.
