Svetislav Pesic praised Germany and agreed with their head coach Gordon Herbert that both Serbia and Germany should've met in the final instead of the bronze-medal game.
Serbia defeated Germany in the bronze-medal game in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games on Saturday. The head coaches of both teams agree - it could've been the final.
Germany's head coach, Gordon Herbert, who left the national team after the Olympics, claimed that the two teams were close to meeting in the final and deserved to be in it. A day later, Serbia's head coach, Svetislav Pesic, was asked about Herbert's words in a press conference at the Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport.
"I agree because he's a man who is always down to earth," Pesic said about Herbert.
"Without going into the depth of everything, I think due to everything that happened in the tournament, the final was supposed to be played by Germany and Serbia," he later said. "They deserved to be in the final, I agree with him."
Serbia managed to push Team USA to its absolute limit in the semifinal, leading by as many as 17 points in the second quarter, and only the incredible performances by Stephen Curry and LeBron James rescued the favorites.
Germany, meanwhile, led against France in the first half and looked poised to advance to the final, but didn't manage to hold on to the lead and ultimately lost to the hosts. Serbia won the matchup against Germany two days later and claimed the bronze.
