Initial scans showed no fracture, and the 35-year-old veteran is undergoing treatment in the hope of being fit for Friday's crucial Game Day 3 match against Australia.
"Nick Calathes was taken to the hospital after the game against Spain due to a sharp pain on his right side, caused by an elbow he received during the match.
"Initial X-rays and ultrasounds showed no fractures but revealed some damage to the soft tissues and around the lower ribs. Calathes is now taking painkillers and is under medical supervision," the Greek Federation said in an update.
With Greece currently 0-2 in the Olympic Basketball Tournament, a win against the Boomers is essential for their chances of reaching the quarterfinals.
