Following Roger Grimau's dismissal, FC Barcelona are already on the lookout for their new head coach. It seems that there is a favorite to fill the vacant position, since the screening of possible substitutes had began days before Grimau was released.

Jaka Lakovic, Dimitris Itoudis and Xavi Pascual were the three main candidates, but it seems that none of the three cases will go any further.

According to encestando, Barca have initiated talks with former Baskonia play-caller Joan Penarroya, who has previously coached BAXI Manresa, San Pablo Burgos, and Valencia Basket. He has been without a team since he was fired by the Basque team last October.

After ten seasons as a coach, the Catalan tactician emerges as the main option to take the reins of the team. Among his greatest successes as a coach are the two Champions Leagues he won with San Pablo Burgos in 2020 and 2021. He also led Valencia Basket to the semifinals of the EuroCup in the 2021-2022 season.

According to El Mundo Deportivo's Jose Ignacio Huguet, Xavi Pascual was the favorite to take over the bench, but Barca's delicate financial situation has led the club to lean towards a lower-profile coach.
