With the introduction of a new format in 2016, the EuroLeague introduced a new concept to the calendar - double weeks. With it came a unique challenge for the club - dealing with more games in the same amount of time as before.

The 2016-17 EuroLeague season started with 16 teams in the tournament and five double weeks. As the years went by, the number of teams increased to 18. Additionally, the number of double weeks in a single season increased as well, regardless of how many teams competed in the EuroLeague.

In 2019, two more teams were introduced into the competition, increasing the double-week count to seven. This season, due to the EuroLeague's agreement with FIBA regarding national team windows, the number went up to eight.

The postseason introduces an additional challenge for the top eight teams - two more 'double weeks' in the playoffs while fighting for the Final Four.

A total of 28 different teams have participated in the modern EuroLeague so far, with Paris Basketball coming in as newbies this season. The question now remains - how well the teams do during the double weeks? And most importantly, how did the teams do in the local leagues immediately after the two straight games in the EuroLeague?

This list will be constantly updated throughout the entire 2024-25 season.

Methodology

The methodology is quite straightforward. After collecting the data of every single double-week game in the EuroLeague, two main factors were used in the entire dataset - win/loss and the result against the spread.

Against the spread (ATS) is a term often used in sports betting. It denotes how well a team does in certain situations against the point spread the bookmakers choose for the team's game.

Shortly, a point spread is a value that shows how close the game should be according to various calculations and pre-determined variables the bookmakers use. There can be a negative and a positive point spread.

If it's negative, it means the team is favored to win; if it's positive, the team is thought to be the underdog and positioned to lose the matchup.

The point spread also tells how close the game is thought to be by the bookmakers. For example, FC Barcelona and Real Madrid play in the El Clasico, and the point spread is 5.5.

The favorite's handicap (another term for point spread) will be -5.5, while the underdog's handicap will be +5.5.

If the favorite wins by more than 5.5 points, the team will have covered the spread. At the same time, if the underdog loses by less than 5.5 points, they will also have covered the spread, and vice versa.

There are thousands of sports bookmakers worldwide. However, OddsPortal is one widely available database that collects real-time odds from a multitude of sports betting companies.

Using OddsPortal, the most equal point spread was chosen for the dataset. If there are two options with equally many bookmakers offering the value, the one that the biggest sports betting company in the world, Bet365, offered was the one chosen.

For example, if handicaps of 5.5 and 4.5 are offered by 8 bookmakers each, the one that Bet365 offered at the time was chosen.

As such, the handicap option was picked for every EuroLeague and every local league game in double weeks. Naturally, the spread should be covered at around a 50% rate the more games are added into the sample.

However, some teams are considerably better or considerably worse against the spread (ATS) than the median.

Additionally, the discrepancy between home and away games after EuroLeague double weeks was looked at, determining whether the difference in where the EuroLeague team plays makes a notable difference in said team's results in the local leagues.

One factor, though, is unquantifiable - injuries. Playing more games more often increases the probability of an injury. Calculating injury data after double weeks is highly improbable due to the lack of information the teams provide about the origin of the injuries their players pick up. As such, this data point will remain unexplored in this article.

Who Wins The Most?

Firstly, let's take a look at the most basic stat - win percentage. Here, one team stands head and shoulders above the rest.

In the eight seasons when the concept was present, Real Madrid won a whopping 78.57% of all double-week games. The second-placed organization, CSKA Moscow, is behind by a massive 10.92%.

Most of the EuroLeague shareholders share the top half of the table, with only AS Monaco creeping in due to their success in the last three seasons following their entrance to the EuroLeague after winning the EuroCup title.

Monaco claim the unofficial title of the best non-shareholder team during double weeks.

The world shareholder in the double weeks is LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne, with a measly 30.3% win rate. If we eliminated the teams that played in the EuroLeague for only a single season, ALBA Berlin would be the worst team in the double weeks, winning just 23.53% of all games.

Only one team achieved the perfect balance of winning as much as losing - UNICS Kazan.

ATS Winners In The EuroLeague

While the winning record tells that the majority of current EuroLeague shareholders are pretty good at double weeks from a pure win/loss standpoint, against-the-spread numbers tell a different story.

Here, the best team is Zenit Saint Petersburg, covering the spread an impressive 61.76% of the time, achieving a positive ATS score in each of their three seasons in the competition.

Interestingly, Brose Bamberg are second in the metric, although they were toward the end of the first table, winning just 7 games in 20 tries.

As such, while the Germans lost the majority of the games, they either kept them close or won by a bigger margin than expected when declared the favorites of the matchup.

The best shareholder against the spread is Maccabi Tel Aviv, with a 59.79% coverage rate.  Interestingly, CSKA Moscow, who were second in the winning percentage table, are fourth-worst in this category, holding a surprising 41.18% coverage rate.

Throughout the entire eight-season new EuroLeague history, all teams covered the spread at least.

However, Crvena Zvezda Belgrade remain the only team to have covered just a single game in the entire season. It happened during the 2017-18 season when only a single matchup went positively in this metric for the Serbian club.

Zalgiris Kaunas hold the unofficial title of the most impressive turnaround in league history. After covering just two out of 14 games in the 2021-22 season, the Lithuanian organization went the complete opposite direction in the 2022-23 season and covered 11 out of their 14 double-week games.

Local League Champions

EuroLeague teams usually win in the local leagues, and they win a lot.

The trend is best exemplified by the two Greek giants - Olympiacos Piraeus and Panathinaikos Athens. They hold the best winning records in the local competition after double weeks out of all 28 teams that have stepped foot in the EuroLeague.

Olympiacos lost just two games in six seasons, with the last loss coming two seasons ago. Panathinaikos went undefeated the first four years after the introduction of double weeks. Interestingly, they lost one regular-season game in each of the remaining four seasons.

Only one EuroLeague lost more often than won after double weeks - Gran Canaria in their lone 2018-19 season in the top European competition.

With Liga Endesa (ACB) considered to be the strongest local league in Europe, Spanish teams can often be found lower in the table compared to their results in the EuroLeague.

For example, three of the bottom four teams are from Spain.

EA7 Emporio Armani Milan played the most games in their local league - the Italian Lega Basket (LBA) - out of all teams, with 52 matches after double weeks.

The number is bigger compared to other clubs due to the scheduling complications during the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons when COVID-19 was rampant in Italy.

COVID-19 introduced some weird data points. For example, while Panathinaikos played nine local league games after EuroLeague double weeks during the 2021-22 season, Olympiacos Piraeus played only four. But more on that later.

The Best ATS Locals

While Olimpia Milan played the most games after double weeks, their rivals, Virtus Segafredo Bologna, are the best at it when it comes to being better than the bookmakers initially predicted.

Virtus covered two-thirds of all spreads during the two seasons in the EuroLeague, with Panathinaikos Athens being a close second with a 65.22% coverage rate. Monaco shines here once again, taking a comfortable third place.

Meanwhile, Brose Bamberg continue to be the oddest team in the bunch. While the German club was one of the best against the spread in the EuroLeague double weeks, they were borderline awful in the local German BBL league, covering just a third of all games in the two seasons they participated in the EuroLeague.

Only six different teams managed to have a perfect season locally - winning all matchups and covering all spreads. Khimki Moscow Region covered all four spreads during the 2018-19 season but lost one game in the VTB League nonetheless (vs. CSKA).

Anadolu Efes Istanbul won two EuroLeague titles in a row, and Ergin Ataman claims they would've gotten the third one if not for the canceled 2019-20 season due to COVID-19. However, their ATS performance in the Turkish BSL was not one to be desired.

Efes covered the spread just 42.55% of the time, easily taking the title of the worst shareholder club against the spread in the local leagues after double weeks. Under the new format, Efes had only one season of positive spread coverage in the eight years.

While FC Barcelona are one of the most dominant European teams in recent memory, both domestically and internationally, their against-the-spread record in the ACB is one of the worst in the entire dataset. The Culers covered the spread 46.51% of the time.

Familiar Local Foes

Although the leagues always try to adjust the calendar, taking into consideration the needs and wants of all teams in the competition, some Euroleague teams played against some opponents much more frequently after double weeks than against others.

Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz were arguably the most unlucky in that regard. With Real Madrid being one of the most formidable teams in the entire continent, the Basques had to face them the most after double weeks - six times in eight seasons. They lost the matchups three times, the most out of all teams they played against.

At the same time, Baskonia were the kryptonite of Valencia Basket. The two teams met only three times after Valencia's double weeks, and Baskonia won all three of their matchups.

Interestingly, the team that both Panathinaikos and Olympiacos played the most was Promitheas Patras, six and seven times, respectively.

What makes the stat even more impressive is that Olympiacos missed two Greek League seasons due to their feud with the Hellenic Basketball Federation. As such, they played against Promitheas seven times after EuroLeague double weeks in six seasons.

Fenerbahce, meanwhile, competed against their long-time rival Galatasaray the most. Described as the Intercontinental Derby, the matchups between Fenerbahce and Galatasaray bring out the most out of both fanbases. Throughout eight seasons in the EuroLeague, Fererbahce went on to play in a domestic derby seven times, losing two games.

Zalgiris Kaunas' main rival in Lithuania is Rytas Vilnius, with the two clubs' fanbases sharing an extended animosity toward one another.

Interestingly, Zalgiris played twice against Rytas after EuroLeague double weeks, and they lost both matchups by a combined margin of 19 points.

Interesting facts

As one would suspect, the home court plays an important role after double weeks in the EuroLeague.

Overall, EuroLeague teams played a total of 783 games after double weeks (387 at home and 396 away). In all those games, EuroLeague teams were significantly more likely to win at home than away, with an 84.75% win rate at home and a 72.98% win rate away.

As the methodology section described at the beginning of the article, there is no clear difference between against-the-spread coverage as the data sample increases. EuroLeague teams covered the spread even better in away games (53.03%) than at home (50.39%).

Derbies and unlucky Fenerbahce

It is not a secret that the local leagues try to adjust their schedules to fit the needs of the teams that compete internationally. However, some cases still arise where the EuroLeague competitor is not particularly satisfied with the end result.

Fenerbahce Istanbul are the only team out of the entire 28-team sample to have two separate seasons where they played only one home game domestically after the EuroLeague double weeks (CSKA Moscow's case is not counted due to a shortened season because of the war).

Additionally, it happened two seasons in a row - during the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons.

Baskonia wouldn't consider themselves very lucky either, at least in some cases. During the 2019-20 season, they had to play both ACB games against Real Madrid after double weeks. The same occurrence happened two years later in 2021-22 (one such situation was caused by a postponement). Interestingly, the home team lost all four games.

Real Madrid were part of another one-time occurrence as well. During the 2018-19 season, both El Clasicos against FC Barcelona took place after EuroLeague double weeks. Barca won both games. Following the end of the season, not a single El Clasico happened after a double week ever again.

Similarly, Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade and Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade played both eternal derbies during the 2022-23 season after EuroLeague double weeks. As is usually the case in the ABA League, the home team won both matchups. This year, this scheduling feat was no longer the case.

The Greek derby and the Serbian derby are often compared to one another. The Greeks also had both of the derbies happen immediately after EuroLeague double weeks during the 2021-22 season. Interestingly, the away team won both matchups.

The Diabolical Bayern Stretch

The most messed up situation happened during the 2021-22 season in Germany.

As the COVID-19 pandemic was still rampant worldwide, many matches were postponed and rescheduled throughout the year. This caused multiple scenarios when teams had to play at times they weren't accustomed to. Well, Bayern took it to another level.

With the 2021-22 EuroLeague regular season going toward the very end, Bayern had to play three postponed games from earlier months. This created a situation where the German team had to play seven games in two weeks.

It all culminated when Bayern were scheduled to play two games in two days, a feat you won't see in Europe. On April 1st, Bayern hosted Crvena Zvezda at home in the EuroLeague, coming away with a comfortable 25-point win. The very next day, they had to go on a trip to play against Oldenburg, a middle-of-the-table team in the BBL.

Looking at the schedule ahead and seeing a matchup just two days later, Bayern decided to rest the vast majority of their first-team players. As such, players who would otherwise be at the end of the rotation had to be the flagbearers of the club.

Josh Obiese, who otherwise averaged 9 minutes of playing time per game, played more than 30 minutes. Jason George, who averaged 4.4 points during the season in Germany, was the leader, scoring 20 points and making 4 assists.

Bayern were projected to lose by just a couple of points (the handicap the bookmakers had set was +2.5 for Bayern). However, they ended up losing by 31 points.

Bayern's bizarre stretch in 2021-22:

  • March 27 vs. Cralsheim - Home - WIN
  • March 29 vs. Olimpia Milan - Away - LOSS
  • April 01 vs. Crvena Zvezda - Home - WIN
  • April 02 vs. Oldenburg - Away - LOSS
  • April 04 vs. Fenerbahce - Away - LOSS
  • April 06 vs. Efes - Away - LOSS
  • April 08 vs. Real Madrid - Away - WIN

As then-Bayern head coach Andrea Trinchieri once said, 'Practice? What is practice? I don't know how it looks. Practice... Of course, I would like to help my team with practice. I cannot.'
