According to an announcement by the club, Simmons "underwent a successful microscopic partial discectomy earlier today to alleviate the nerve impingement in his lower back." The guard had been suffering from a nerve impingement all throughout the season.

The Nets also confirmed that the player will miss the remainder of the season but that he will be ready to make his full return for training camp next year.

The 27-year-old former Rookie of the Year missed the entire 2021-22 season after holding out due to disagreements with the Philadelphia 76ers management over his psychological state. After getting traded to Brooklyn, he did not play a single game as well due to the lower back injury.

Simmons was declared to be 100% healthy last summer and committed to playing for the Australian national team in the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympic Games. The commitment now might be in vain.

The Australian point guard is averaging 6.1 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 5.7 assists this season.
