The San Antonio Spurs rookie, a first-ever Frenchman to be selected first overall in an NBA Draft, was named the best French basketball player, winning the Alain Gilles Trophy.

The jury that decides the winner comprises 19 members from the French Basketball Federation (FFBB) and the local media outlets. The 20th member is the public that votes for the winner as well, and their vote is counted toward the end result.

Each jury member had to present a top three, with 10 points going for first place, 7 for second, and 5 for third. Wembanyama received 178 points, beating second-placed New York Liberty guard Marines Johannes by 99 points.

Interestingly, Johannes won the public vote, receiving 57% of the votes.

This past season, Wembanyama led Metropolitans 92 to a French League (LNB) final and won all five individual trophies that the league awards.

Laetitia Guapo won the Alain Gilles Trophy last year, with Nicolas Batum taking the reigns the year before.
