Spain returned from a 10-point deficit against the hosts and defeated Germany in the semifinal 96-91.
On their way to the gold medal game, they overcame a double-digit deficit in all three knockout stage games.
Nobody saw Spain making the finals before the tournament, but Hernangomez said they all saw each other as champions in the locker room.
"We never gave up. We're not selfish. We're trusting our teammates and coaching staff. We trust our game planning. There are a lot of things working in the entire team," Hernangomez told BasketNews.
"The team means [that] everybody works so hard for the team's good. All of us feel important. From 1 to 12, from the equipment manager to the therapist. Everybody feels so important, and I think that's our key," he continued.
"Nobody counted on us. Nobody trusted us before the tournament. But in the locker room, we see each other as champions," Hernangomez concluded.
