Barcelona have lost Juan Nunez for at least two weeks, while two more players remain sidelined ahead of the crucial derby against Real Madrid. Coach Joan Penarroya talked about the problems, the decision not to sign a player before the deadline, and the team's aspirations.
A few hours after traveling to Madrid to play the fourth El Clasico of the season, Joan Penarroya could not hide his concern over the delicate situation that FC Barcelona is going through.
One of those concerns is Juan Nunez's injury, as the Spanish point guard will be out for a minimum of two weeks due to knee problems that were taking a toll on his performance. His absence has been added to those of Nicolas Laprovittola, Jan Vesely and Kevin Punter.
"The issue is worrisome because he has been suffering from knee problems for a few months that for many weeks have prevented him from practicing," Penaroya commented.
"He's at a point now where he can't play. He's made a lot of sacrifices, playing under all possible treatments, but it will be difficult for him to play again this season with us."
Asked about the club's intention to not make any new signings despite Nunez's setback, the 55-year-old coach did not want to delve deeper.
"I've already talked about that. What do you want me to tell you? I am a coach and I train the players," he replied.
"I have to try to get the most out of those of us who are on the court. I've already talked about everything else to whom I had to talk, weeks ago. When you come to a club like Barca, you expect things to be better and not have so many mishaps."
Asked about whether Barca should redefine their objectives in this second half of the season, Penarroya appealed to the ambition of the group, despite the difficulties they have to face.
"The team has to be more united and mentally tough," he pointed out.
"We have to be aware of our current reality and not give up anything. Our aspirations remain the highest. It will be difficult to have regularity in these conditions, but we can have brilliant matches," he concluded.
