On Thursday night, AS Monaco had the opportunity to surpass Paris Basketball and take the top spot in the EuroLeague standings. However, the Roca Team fell short, losing heavily to Real Madrid, 94-72, in the EuroLeague Round 17 game.

This marked Monaco's biggest defeat under new coach Vassilis Spanoulis, who criticized his team's mentality going into the match against the inconsistent Real.

"Real Madrid were better. They wanted more, they needed more, and they showed it," Spanoulis said in the post-game conference. "Like I told my players, to be in the first position maybe make us a little bit dizzy and think that we are a superteam now. We played very loose and very relaxed basketball. They beat us everywhere on the court. Defensively and offensively, they were one click up in speed.

"Real is a Final Four candidate, and they wanted this game badly," he went on to say. "They showed it on the floor. We were a little bit arrogant, a little bit relaxed -- we can win this game without playing basketball."

Monaco is still co-leading the league with an 11-6 record and holds a 4-2 mark under Spanoulis' leadership.
