Porter asked the court to modify his release to allow him to play in Greece for Promitheas Patras.
Months after Jontay Porter got involved in an NBA betting scandal, a club in Greece, Promitheas Patras, wanted the player to get a second chance.
Now-former NBA player, Porter is likely facing 41 to 51 months in prison for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, Mike Vorkunov from The Athletic notes. The player pleaded guilty on July 10th.
According to Ryan Morik from Fox News, court documents show that Porter asked the court to modify his release to allow him to play for Promitheas Patras in Greece, which will compete in the Basketball Champions League (BCL) next season. The motion was denied, Vorkunov writes.
Porter checked out early in games to settle large gambling debts. The big man had a gambling addiction, his lawyer Jeff Jenson claimed. Porter placed at least 13 bets on NBA games.
He is the first active player or coach to be banned from the NBA for gambling since the mid-1950s.
