AS Monaco superstar and 2023-24 EuroLeague season MVP Mike James talked about his future with the Monagesque team.
Mike James had himself a season to remember with AS Monaco. Although they failed to make it to the 2024 EuroLeague Final Four with a slim defeat at the hands of Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul, James nevertheless became the regular season MVP.
Naturally, as we enter the period of a summer of transfers and changes, Mike James's situation is called into question. At the moment, his contract with Monaco has expired.
In an interview after the LNB Pro A finals Game 1 victory against Paris Basketball, the American guard talked about his future with Monaco and his relationship with coach Sasa Obradovic.
"From day 1, we had a good rapport with each other, and I think it has grown as the years have gone on," James said about his relationship with Obradovic.
"Both of us are only interested in winning. He's one of the few who takes defeat even worse than me. I respect him for that. Since day one, we have had a good relationship, and it has only gotten better over the years", he continued.
"Obviously, you hope that on every team, you are going to grow all the way. This is my third year in Monaco, and it would be nice to continue here to win the EuroLeague with the [same] coach. That would be the dream, [b]ut it seems so far away. Game 2 is tomorrow, and [we are] focusing on that at the moment."
James also commended the efforts of club president Alexey Fedorychev, saying that he was trying to build a base around him and Obradovic. James also said that they were successful every year with this base and that he hopes to continue to have this success.
This year, Monaco was eliminated 3-2 by Fenerbahce. James concluded the season by averaging 17.9 points, 4.1 rebounds, 5.1 assists, and 1.2 steals per game.
