On August 5, 2023, Ricky Rubio shocked the basketball world. During the preparation for the upcoming FIBA Basketball World Cup with the Spain national team, Rubio announced that he's taking a break from basketball.

After many months of silence and the unknown, Rubio picked up basketball again in January 2024 after joining FC Barcelona practices.
Eventually, that led to a signed contract with Barca until the end of the season, and on March 1, Rubio made his return to the court after a 314-day break.
"It's good," Rubio told BasketNews on what it's like to be on the court again. "It's been a long process, but I'm adjusting to a new mindset, and it's good. It's good to be out there."
The 33-year-old left the EuroLeague after the 2010-11 campaign and has played in the NBA ever since.
Now, the Spanish guard averages 5.2 points, 3.3 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 8.3 PIR per game in 10 EuroLeague appearances this season.
