After a very intense battle, Greece overcame New Zealand and won the decisive game with the final score of 83-74 (15-20, 17-23, 18-11, 33-20) New Zealand played an amazing first half, ending the first 20 minutes of basketball up by 11 points, with Greece struggling to keep the pace of the Tall Blacks.

Zero points, zero field goals, and a challenging first quarter, which put Team USA behind New Zealand by ten early in the opening FIBA World Cup match. The entire US team turned the ball over six times in the first seven minutes of the game.

Team USA struggled to score in the first quarter but ended up easily beating New Zealand in their 2023 FIBA World Cup debut by a result of 99-72 (19-18, 26-18, 31-22, 23-14). Only Austin Reaves' late three-pointer saved the favorites from the lowest-scoring quarter in Team USA World Cup opening games. The remaining three quarters were much easier, and the Americans enjoyed a comfortable win.

After a loss against Germany earlier in the week, the Canadian national team bounced back with a vengeance against New Zealand. Led by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the Canadians dismantled their opponents 107-76 (28-24, 39-14, 19-24, 22-14).

Following an intense four-day training camp in Auckland, Tall Blacks head coach Pero Cameron and his coaching staff have selected a squad of 14 athletes to travel to Japan, Germany, and China in advance of the FIBA World Cup 2023 held in the Philippines from August 25 to September 10. The 14 athletes for the Tall Black's extended FIBA World Cup squad are:

Just two weeks before the FIBA Basketball World Cup in the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia, the four qualified countries will do some fine-tuning.

The first two teams to qualify for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 from the Asian Qualifiers are New Zealand and Lebanon. New Zealand were the first Asian Qualifiers team to confirm their ticket when the Philippines beat Saudi Arabia, shortly after the Tall Blacks defeated Jordan in an earlier game.
