L'Equipe writes that AS Monaco got a confirmation for their participation in next season's EuroLeague regardless of the 2022-23 results.
AS Monaco will participate in the EuroLeague competition next year, even if the team will not make the playoffs this season, according to Yann Ohnona of L'Equipe.
In theory, the Roca Team must reach at least the playoffs stage this campaign to get a Wild Card and compete in the EuroLeague for a third season in a row.
However, Monaco has already obtained the behind-the-scenes guarantee for the 2023-24 EuroLeague season.
L'Equipe adds that Monaco's participation will require ratification by the EuroLeague shareholders.
"To say that the place is already 'guaranteed' is not technically true. But I will say it this way: we want Monaco to continue to evolve in the EuroLeague," EuroLeague CEO Marshall Glickman, who visited yesterday's Monaco-Olympiacos game, told L'Equipe when asked about the spot.
"There are 18 clubs, and 13 of them have permanent member licenses. One of these shareholders -- CSKA Moscow -- is suspended due to the war in Ukraine. This gives us a bit of space," he added and then expanded further:
"Considering that CSKA will not return next season - even if no one knows what is happening in geopolitical terms - keeping Monaco should not be a problem. Once Moscow is reintegrated, it will be more complicated.
"In any case, the simplest thing for Monaco would be to qualify due to their sporting results. But let's be clear: we want Monaco. We want them to be part of the EuroLeague family, and we are very optimistic that they will soon be able to build a new gym with the required capacity," Jordi Bertomeu's successor concluded.
