Peristeri will play in the BCL group phase in the 2022-23 season and that was a necessary condition for the 40-year-old EuroLeague legend to take over the team. The agreement is valid for two years.

In their official announcement, Peristeri mentioned that "Vassilis Spanoulis starts his coaching career from the bench of our team, with vision, faith and will, in order to accomplish the goals of our club."

After reaching the agreement with Peristeri, Vassilis Spanoulis said: "I am very happy to start my career, in this new chapter of my life, with the team of Peristeri. They're a historic team with a lot of fans following it and a tradition in basketball.

A team that is healthy, has vision and motivation to achieve nice things in the future. It's something that coincides with my own ambitions. I thank the people of Peristeri for the trust they showed to me since the beginning."

The deal had been anticipated by Misko Raznatovic, Spanoulis' long-time, agent, who wrote on Twitter:

Spanoulis is expected to have two coaches from Thessaloniki as his assistants. Both have plenty of experience in Greece's top flight. Savvas Kamperidis (who last coached Aris and Lavrio) and Kostas Charalambidis, who was in Dimitris Priftis' staff at Panathinaikos until three months ago will join the rookie coach.

Dusan Vukcevic, who will be involved with the coaching staff for the first time, and Babis Skouzis, who comes from the Olympiacos' young teams, will also be on the staff.

The club's team manager will be Giorgos Tsiaras, also hailing from Larissa. Tsiaras, a former professional player, had the same role at Iraklis Thessaloniki for the last three seasons, while still playing for Mykonos in Greece's third division.

According to multiple reports, Spanoulis' first wish was to be joined by his best man, friend and former Greek NT teammate Nikos Zisis. But since the other retired Greek legend took over the GM position at the national team, the plan was abandoned.

One of the thorny issues regarding Spanoulis' talks with Peristeri revolved around the team's budget and finances. The two sides agreed that a significant increase compared to last season is needed, propelled by Spanoulis' own brand name which could potentially attract more sponsors.

According to a recent report by sport24.gr, Spanoulis and the rest of the coaching staff will get 300,000 euros, while another 1,3 million will be spent on players' salaries only. In total, per the same report, the club's budget ahead of the 2022-23 campaign approaches 2,3 million euros.

Even before the deal was done, the first names of potential signings started to surface. Former Panathinaikos OPAP Athens forward Leonidas Kaselakis is expected to be one of the first players to be announced. Spanoulis has also talked with Promitheas Patras captain Dimitris Agravanis, Stefan Moody, who's coming off an impressive season with Larissa in the Greek League, as well as with his former teammate at Olympiacos, Octavius Ellis.

Peristeri are also targeting American forward Shakur Juston, who had a decent campaign with Aris last year, and 33-year-old Croatian center Miro Bilan, who last played with Ukrainian Prometei and Italian Dinamo Sassari.
