ASVEL Villeurbanne are showing strong interest in acquiring one of the top Polish league scorers Jonah Mathews, per BasketNews sources.
The 25-year-old shooting guard averaged 17.9 points (FG: 47%), 3.6 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 1.4 steal for Anwil Wloclawek in the Polish league.
Mathews was the 4th best scorer in the league, where Anwil finished second in the regular season and fell short in the semifinal series.
Fenerbahce BEKO Istanbul targeted a 1.91 m American player during the 2021-22 season, but Anwil refused to let him go on a buyout.
Former USC Trojan has started his pro career in Sweden. In the 2020-21 season, he averaged 20.2 points (3FG: 38.5%), 3.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.5 steal for Koping Stars.
ASVEL are preparing to reshape their backcourt since their primary scorers, Elie Okobo and Chris Jones, are on the move.
ASVEL might face more serious changes, as their projected No. 1 2023 NBA draft pick Victor Wembanyama seriously considers opting out of his contract with Villeurbanne.
