The Danish forward suffered a right-hand fracture in the EuroLeague Round 16 contest which was won by the Spanish powerhouse (75-73).
With the score 73-67 for Real Madrid and 46 seconds remaining, AX Armani Milan's forward drove to the basket. As he was airborne, he had contact with Madrid's Rudy Fernandez.
Shields fell to the floor and started to experience pain in his right wrist. After the foul, he was unable to shoot the free throws and didn't enter the game again.
The 27-year-old was the top scorer for Milan in that game, finishing with 18 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 steals in the loss against Real.
On Saturday morning, about 36 hours after the injury, Armani Milan announced that "recovery time is expected to be long."
Shields is expected to undergo surgery to resolve the problem on his right hand, a source told BasketNews.
Commenting on the news, Malcolm Delaney wrote on Twitter that Rudy's foul constituted a "dirty play":
"Dirty plays need to be punished. Nothing about this was a basketball play, we all know this," the American guard posted.
