Lukic replaces Sergey Bazarevich, who was unable to take the national team to the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Lukic is expected to have a difficult task at the European Championship next summer, where Russia's opponents in the group will be Spain, Turkey, Georgia, Belgium and Bulgaria.

The 50-year-old tactician has been coaching Nizhny Novgorod since 2017 and was voted as the 2021 coach of the year in the FIBA Champions League.

Lukic will make his debut on the bench of Russia in the 2023 World Cup qualifiers. As things stand right now, he will be coaching both Nizhny Novgorod and the Russian NT, which features many players currently on his team.

As for Sergey Bazarevich, with whom the cooperation ended, he reached fourth place with Russia at the Eurobasket in 2017.
