The sudden sacking of Martin Schiller shook the European basketball world. The Austrian was forced to leave his position just after two Turkish Airlines EuroLeague rounds. But did you know that this is one of the fastest firings in EuroLeague history?
Looking at the rounds, Schiller became just the fourth coach fired after the second round. The basketball specialist joined the company, which also has Zalgiris surnames.
In addition to the newly dismissed Zalgiris bench boss, this list includes Zvi Sherf (2002 - Slask Wroclaw), Erez Edelstein (2016 - Maccabi Tel Aviv), and also former Kaunas club's coach Ilias Zouros, whom GM Paul Motiejunas fired at the beginning of 2013-2014 season.
The same Zouros (Zalgiris) was sacked even earlier - after the first round of the 2011-2012 season, when on October 17, 2011, he lost to CSKA Moscow.
Moreover, the first round was the last for Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius strategist Aleksandar Dzikic (2012), Tomo Mahoric (2006 - Union Olimpija), Argyris Pedoulakis (2016 - Panathinaikos Athens), and David Blatt ( 2019 - Olympiacos Piraeus).
Looking at the EuroLeague matches' dates, after which the coaches were fired, Schiller is the second earliest discharged specialist in EuroLeague history.
He is only one day behind David Blatt, who was packing his suitcases after defeat on October 6, 2019, against LDCL ASVEL Villerbeune (63-82).
