Marc Gasol is officially a free agent after being waived by the Memphis Grizzlies but his status should change soon. According to the Catalan newspaper L'Esportiu, Gasol is expected to be announced as a new player of Girona, a team in Spanish second division LEB Gold, in the next 24 hours. Girona was the last team that Gasol played for before making the jump to the NBA and starting his amazing career.
The big man has been heavily involved with Girona Basket in the last few years, becoming the president of the club. Now that his experience in the NBA is over, he wanted to go back to Spain and stay closer to his family.
Gasol won an NBA champion with the Toronto Raptors in 2019 and was named the Defensive Player of the Year in 2013, while he was still playing for the Memphis Grizzlies. With the Spanish NT, he has won two silver medals at the Olympic Games and two gold medals at the FIBA World Cup.
Girona is currently coached by Carles Marco, a former Spanish professional player.
