Kidd flew to Latvia, where he met Mavericks big man Kristaps Porzingis and stayed for three days, The Dallas Morning News reports.
"I wanted to see where he lived, that is home for him. Beautiful place. We always talk about family. Sometimes we need to show our care factor. I care. I wanted to let him know that I care."
The new Mavericks coach was optimistic about Porzingis' health and mindset: "I know that he’s healthy. I know he’s excited. And then I just wanted to talk to him about things basketball-wise as well as off the court. We always talk about basketball, but I wanted to see where he was off the court. He’s in a great place.”
The 26-year-old Latvian center averaged 20.1 points, 8.9 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 1.4 blocks over 30.4 minutes in the NBA regular season. In the Playoffs, he recorded 13.1 points, 5.4 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 0.7 blocks over 33 minutes.
