The Royal club and transfers to the NBA – a well-known duo. Marca calculated how much money Real Madrid received from player transfers upon their relocation to the strongest basketball league.

The NBA has become one of the main Real Madrid customers in recent years. Since the Pablo Laso era began in 2011, there have been 10 Madrid players who have crossed the Atlantic to join one of the NBA franchises. Some of those players even had to pay themselves for the exit.

Including the last Usman Garuba's transition to the NBA, the total amount has reached 18 million euros. Of course, the Royal club will not receive all the money at once, as the payments usually come in separate installments over the years, but it's still a solid income.

Only in the last year, Real have a guaranteed future income of €11 million, as Facundo Campazzo, Gabriel Deck and Usman Garuba left the squad. The exit clause of Campazzo was for six million euros - the highest clause paid in the history of European basketball.

Deck's transfer was in the amount of two million euros, while Garuba's - three. According to the NBA collective bargaining agreement, the NBA teams are allowed only to pay about €750,000. The remaining money must come from the player.

Before that, Nikola Mirotic paid €2.5 million for his exit to the Chicago Bulls in 2014. The power forward made the last payment of his exit clause a couple of years ago, just before committing to FC Barcelona.

Sergio Rodriguez paid the same amount as Mirotic in 2016 to join the Philadelphia 76ers. Lastly, Luka Doncic had to give two million euros to go to the Dallas Mavericks (2018).

Kyle Singler (Pistons), Salah Mejri (Mavericks), Maurice Ndour (Knicks), and Willy Hernangomez (Knicks) were the players whose contracts ended, therefore the transfer clauses did not have to be covered.

Even if the total number of €18M sounds like a large amount of money, it will not even cover half of Real’s budget for this season, which is reportedly around 40 million euros.
